Most people won’t vocalize those questions with us, although a few have. They are actually really good questions. So let me try and answer them.
We are going as far as we can, do as much as we can, see all we can, for as long as we can. Every day our bodies and minds remind us that we are running out of time. Now, I’m not trying to be morbid but it’s true that Mary and I are both closer to the end than the beginning. So we have decided not to sit around and wait until we’re out of time. We are going to get out and live. We are both followers of Jesus and He said that He came to give us life and that it might be full. (John 10:10) We’re going for the full life as we finish our course.
Why in an RV? Because we like it. We also think it is the most affordable way for us to see North America. Unless we do it Peter Jenkins style (“Google it Barbara”) and let’s face it, it’s way too late for that. Our house is going to follow us everywhere we go.
Our daughters gave us these “stick on maps” of the U.S. and Canada. As you visit each state or province you stick that piece to your map. Our goal is to fill every space on the U.S. and Canada maps. But we also want to go to Mexico too so we might need another map. We did follow a guy who traveled from Argentina to Alaska in a VW Van. I wonder if Pete-n-Pen could handle such a journey?
We are looking forward to going to a lot of places, meeting al lot of people and being salt and light along the way. We want to visit every National Park in the U.S. and as many of the National Monuments, Historic Sites as we can. It turns out we (U.S. citizens) own 640 million acres and we want to see as much as that as we can.
Is it all planned out? No. But here’s what I know as of now. When we leave the Detroit metro area the last week of October we will travel to South-east Minnesota and visit with our daughter and her family for a few days. Then we are going to travel to Sioux Falls, South Dakota and establish our residency. Then we will head south for the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. We spent our honeymoon in Gatlinburg, Tennessee just outside of this park. (It was just after our honeymoon that they began to call them the “Smokey” Mountains.) Because our honeymoon was hot! We hope to park Pete at the Cades Cove RV Park and spend about a week there, depending on the weather. When we leave there, we’ll make our way to North Alabama and hang out with my sister for a while.
What we do from there is undecided. We may wonder around Georgia for a while and even down into Florida. We are just not sure at this point. We do have a spot reserved in an Escapees RV Park in Summerdale, Alabama, near Gulf Shores, from mid-January to the middle of March. The beauty of all of this is we will be free to determine our schedule, route, and destination. Some things will be planned others will be on the fly.
The biggest journey on our agenda will begin just about a year from now as we begin our journey to Alaska. There will be much more about that later.
One thing for sure it’s going to be adventure. We are looking forward to it. We look forward to sharing our journey with you.
